DMS 417/516: Homework #1

DUE: 24 Feb (or anytime before then)

Create a derivative work, legally.

Details: Create some sort of new work - text, image, sound, video, software, whatever - based in part on some other copyrighted work. The other work that you base it on should be by someone you do not know (i.e. not your own work or a friend's). You must guarantee that you have a legal right to create this derivative work. You can do this by asking permission from the copyright holder, paying an appropriate compulsory license fee, abiding by a license that the work is published under (such as Creative Commons or the GPL), or any other legal means that you can find.

When you turn in the work (physically or by e-mail), include an explanation identifying what other work you derived it from, who owns the copyright of the other work, and how you've established that what you did is legal.

If you do something involving a GPL or Creative Commons-type license (methods which don't require actively contacting someone), I will expect you to make your new work available to the public on a website somewhere, with the necessary licensing information.
